How do I join?
Joining Parkes Shire Library is FREE!
When you wish to join, the Library staff require a form of identification that has your current name, address and signature. This could be a drivers licence, health care card or firearms licence. You will need to fill in a library membership form that is obtained from the Library staff. If a person under 16 wishes to join they will need their parent or guardian consent.

When signing the Library membership form, you are agreeing to:
-
Comply with all the rules and regulations of the Parkes Shire Library, as set out in the Parkes Shire Library "General Information" brochure.
- Accepting full responsibility for the safe usage of any materials borrowed.

The prompt payment of fines and charges that are credited to your card or dependents cards for damage caused to items borrowed.
- Giving the library notice of any changes to the details on this form.

Can I borrow straight away?
Yes. Provided you have produced the required identification when joining.

What happens if I lose my card?
If you lose your card a $2.60 service fee is charged for a replacement. Note: lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately.

How many items can I borrow?
You may borrow a maximum of 20 items on your card at any one time. This can be a combination of any items for loan, except for DVDs which are limited to four (4) per card.

How long can I keep my items?
All library items, except for DVDs, may be borrowed for four (4) weeks at a time. DVDs may be borrowed for a two (2) week loan period. 

What happens if I am late returning my items?
At the present time there are no fines for overdue items. However, you will not be able to borrow any further items until the overdue ones are returned.

Can I keep my items for extra time?
Yes. In most cases you may renew your items for another loan period. Therefore a maximum of two loan periods or eight weeks, or four weeks for DVDs. The second loan period will only be allowed if there are no reserves or a waiting list for that item.

You can do this by:-

  • Telephone - Have your card handy as you will need to tell us your card number.
  • In person - Bring your card to the library and ask us to renew the items you have at home.

Remember - items that are reserved or on a waiting list cannot be renewed.

What sort of material is not for loan?
The library has a Reference Collection that is for use in the library only. It includes items such as encyclopaedias, dictionaries and directories.
*Please note that photocopying is allowed if it conforms with Copyright Act Guidelines.

What sort of material is for loan?

  • Adult, young adult and children's fiction
  • Adult and children's non-fiction
  • Children's easy picture books
  • Children's Readers
  • Large print, fiction and non-fiction
  • Audio-books (books on CD's)
  • Music CD's
  • DVDs and Videos
  • Magazines
  • Online databases
  • And much more

Music rated "Strong - coarse language and/or themes" cannot be borrowed by persons under 16 years of age. DVDs and videos are loaned according to their censorship rating.

What electronic services does the Library have?

  • At Parkes Library there are 8 public access computers to the Internet. It is a wise idea to ring and book a time for the internet as it is a very popular service. A $2.50 per half hour charge applies for Email and chat usage. Research is free.
  • Parkes Library is also a WiFi Zone. A $2.50 per hour charge applies.
  • At Parkes there are 8 public access computers with Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. A $3.00 per unlimited sitting applies. CDs and USB drives can be used, however they must be checked by staff for virsues before use.
  • Trundle and Peak Hill Library's have 1 public access computer available for use for Internet access and Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • All Libraries can send and receive facsimiles.
