Noxious WeedsLast modified: August 17, 2009 - 1:03 PM
Parkes Shire Council is a member of the Lachlan Valley Weeds Advisary Committee. The Committee runs a web site called http://www.westernweeds.org, which includes details of the differnet classes of problem weeds in the Shire. See the web site for more details. Noxious weeds are categorised according to what action is required to control them. This takes into consideration the extent of the weed, available control methods and the weeds importance. The four categories are:W1 - A weed that is of limited distribution or does not occur in the State but which poses a severe threat to agriculture, the environment, or the community. Landholders must fully and continuously suppress and destroy a W1 noxious weed. There are 13 W1 declared weeds for Parkes Shire. W2 - A weed that poses a threat to agriculture, the environment, or the community and has the potential to spread to other areas. Landholders must fully and continuously suppress and destroy W2 noxious weeds that are likely to spread to other land. There are 19 W2 declared weeds for Parkes Shire. W3 - A weed that poses a threat to agriculture, the environment, or the community and has the potential to spread to other areas, but is so widespread that total suppression and destruction is impractical. Landholders must prevent the spread and reduce the numbers and distribution of W3 noxious weeds. . There are five W3 declared weeds for Parkes Shire. W4 - A weed that poses a threat to agriculture, the environment, or the community and has the potential to spread and for which a specified action, which is different to that required under any of the other categories, must be undertaken. There are no W4 declared weeds for Parkes Shire.
